Who is speaking about Voice over IP (VoIP)  most often means the usage of VoIP with SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) at the same time.

SIP is a standardized protocol which is responsible of signalling the connection and disconnection of voice communication in the IP net.For the transmission of voice and data on the same cable the internet protocol (IP) and SIP have been established.

All products (terminals, PBXs, software, …) which are using these protocols can communicate with each other.
